This Day That Age
The most gruesome railway disaster in recent years in South India occurred on September 27 night when an express train from Hyderabad to Kazipet plunged into a river, following the collapse of a girder bridge. At the time of accident, more than 300 passengers were travelling in the ill-fated train. According to the Chief Minister of Hyderabad, 73 bodies have been recovered. More than seventy persons have been injured. The whereabouts of the remaining are not known. They are feared to have been drowned in the river, which was in spate on account of heavy rainfall all through on September 27. The accident occurred at Aler, 54 miles from Hyderabad. The train connects the Grand Trunk Express at Kazipet and the passengers included many bound for Madras and Delhi. The train left Hyderabad at 7.30 p.m. on September 27 and the accident took place at 11 p.m. Although railway officials have proceeded to the spot, rescue operations are said to be hampered owing to the floods in the river. It is stated that there are several breaches on the railway line and also on the trunk road on either side of the scene of accident.
