VISAKHAPATNAM, SEPT. 28. The Visakha-II MLA and Congress leader, S. Rangaraju, on Tuesday said a task force would be set up soon to keep a watch on the springing up of new slums in the city. After a review with the officials on developmental activities in his constituency at the Circuit House, he told reporters that the district Collector, Praveen Prakash, had agreed to set up the task force so as to make the city slum-free in the next four years.
Removal of slums
Advising the officials to ensure removal of slums once the dwellers were allotted alternative units under various housing schemes including the Centre-funded Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana (VAMBAY), he said in most places, the slum-dwellers were putting up new huts even after their rehabilitation elsewhere. In reply to a question, Mr. Rangaraju said that as per the promise made by his party during elections, an exercise would be launched to identify `ineligible' beneficiaries who were given houses/sites by the previous Telugu Desam Party Government.
Time-bound programme
The Congress MLA told the officials to prepare a time-bound programme so that the slum-dwellers of Jawaharnagar, Indiranagar, Siddharthnagar, Kanakaladibba, Sebastian Colony and other areas were provided alternative houses. If required, the ruling party leaders would hold a meeting with the top officials of the Railways for transfer of land ownership to build multi-storeyed houses, he said. He wanted the revival of the Deepam scheme and identification of new beneficiaries.
