5 LTTE men killed in Batticaloa

By V.S. Sambandan

COLOMBO: Five members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and a civilian were reported killed in continued internecine fighting between the warring factions of the LTTE in Sri Lanka's troubled eastern Batticaloa district today. According to reports, the fighting commenced around 11.30 a.m.,with an "attack" by the supporters of the LTTE's former military commander, V. Muralitharan (`Col.' Karuna). They fired rocket propelled grenades at an LTTE sentry point, near the Vakarai sector, north of Batticaloa. Five LTTE cadres were killed. Subsequently, a womanwas reported killed and two injured in "mortar shelling." The exact sequence of the shelling is not known, but the TamilNet website reported that the firing was "from the direction" of an Army camp in the area. There was no comment from the LTTE on the "attack" by Karuna's supporters. Since the March rebellion by Karuna, there is a power vacuum in the rebel-held east, with neither the LTTE nor Karuna gaining a clear stronghold.
