10th bird flu death in Thailand

Bangkok: Thailand on Tuesday said that a woman who died earlier this month had suffered from bird flu, becoming the 10th person to die of the disease in the country this year. The 26-year-old woman Pranee Thongchan died on September 20, and is confirmed to have contracted the deadly H5N1 virus, Charal Trinwuthipong, director general of the Disease Control Department, said. Pranee's 11-year-old daughter Sakuntala, who died on September 12, is also ``believed'' to have died of avian influenza but it cannot be confirmed because her body was cremated before tests could be done, he said. Pranee's sister, Pranom (32), also was confirmed on Monday as suffering from bird flu, and is now in hospital. The two sisters had been tending to Sakuntala in hospital before her death. Pranee is not believed to have ever handled chickens, raising concern that she was a possible victim of human-to-human transmission. But Mr. Charal did not immediately say if there was any evidence to sustain that theory. — AP
