Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, SEPT. 28. The Education Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, said here the government planned to introduce diploma courses in colleges to enable students doing degree courses acquire a diploma simultaneously. This would help them look for jobs after graduation. With Pondicherry going to have a special economic zone, the demand for qualified people would go up. Mr. Lakshminarayanan said there was a plan to run collegiate courses on the premises of higher secondary schools in rural areas in the evenings for the benefit of students. If this facility was introduced the students need not come to the town for college education. This would also ease the pressure on colleges with too many aspirants for too few seats in the arts and science streams. This would be introduced pending formal opening of colleges by constructing buildings in rural areas, which would take time.
