NO STOPPING HER: U.S. swimmer Erin Popovich, who won seven gold medals in the swimming competitions at the Paralympics at Athens. AP
ATHENS, SEPT. 28. On the last night of swimming at the Paralympics, Erin Popovich couldn't stop smiling. The American anxiously awaited her seventh gold medal on the podium, clutching a bunch of flowers to her chest. She grinned as she sang along with the national anthem. After victory in the 4x100 medley relay, Popovich took home more medals than American Olympic star Michael Phelps, who won six. ``I came from behind,'' Popovich, 19, said. ``My perseverance got me here.'' A student at Colorado State University, Popovich is only 1.32 meters (4-foot-4) and says swimming releases her from everyday life. ``I find the pool someplace I can escape everything that's going on,'' she said. ``When I swim, I can get things clear in my head.''
