Belgaum
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELGAUM, SEPT. 28. Adventure sports should be promoted to attract tourists to Belgaum district, Ramesh Algodkar, convener, Environment Adventure Academy, has said. Speaking at a function organised here on Monday to mark World Tourism Day by the Department of Tourism, Nehru Youth Centre, and Siddarameshwar Junior College, Mr. Algodkar regretted the lack of participation of youth in adventure sports. Adventure sports helped the youth to strengthen their bodies and minds and develop a positive attitude towards life, he said. The Deputy Director of the Information Department, Basavaraj Kambi, stressed the need to popularise adventure sports to boost tourism in the district. Along with the Government, the responsibility of protecting tourism centres and environmental zones lay with the community, he said. Tourism should be dealt with in a professional manner, he added. The District Youth Services and Sports Officer, Vilas Ghadi, listed the sporting events being organised by his department. S.R. Hiremath, principal of the host college, called upon the students to visit tourist centres in and around the district and understand them in their historical and cultural context.
