Chandy visits Sneha Bhavan

KOZHIKODE, SEPT. 28. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, visited the house of the Missionaries of Charity, Sneha Bhavan, at Athanikkal here today to get a first hand account of the happenings from the sisters there who were injured in the attack at the Dalit colony near Panthirankkavu on September 25.

The Chief Minister spoke to the Mother Superior, Kusumam, Sister Shalot, Sister Sirilina and two residents of the colony - Baby and Vilasini - who were present at the Sneha Bhavan. Mr. Chandy told Mother Kusumam though they had not filed a formal complaint, they would have to identify those responsible for the incident when called upon to do so.

He was all appreciation for the good work being carried on by the sisters.

Two-pronged action

The Chief Minister said the police would soon nab those guilty of the attack and take remedial measures to alleviate poverty existing in the Dalit colony.The Government would improve the basic facilities at the colony, he added.

The colony residents told the Chief Minister that there had been no moves at all from the Sisters of Charity to convert them. They had only assisted them to tide over the poverty.

Attack condemned

Meanwhile, the Kozhikode district council of the Communist Party of India(CPI) has flayed the attack on the nuns.

The CPI State executive committee member, Satyan Mokeri, alleged that the attack on the nuns was part of the attack by RSS-BJP combine on minority communities in the country. The outfits could not escape from the responsibility of the attack, the CPI office-bearers, E. K. Vijayan, T. V. Balan and I. V. Shashankan, said in a statement.

The Gandhi Peace Foundation, Nationalist Mahila Congress, Kerala Dalit Panthers, Gandhi Poura Samithi, Yuvakala Samithiand the Calicut University Chair for Christian Studies also protested against attack.
