Ballot papers destroyed, AIADMK-DMK clash

ERODE, SEPT. 28. Tension prevailed for an hour in the Sathyamangalam panchayat union office this noon when an All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) functionary allegedly destroyed 14 ballot papers during counting of votes polled in yesterday's Guthiyalathur ward-2 councillor election.

In a scuffle between AIADMK and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) counting agents, three AIADMK men were injured and taken to hospital.

Vincent, Rangasamy and Tamilmani of the AIADMK lodged a complaint with the Sathyamangalam police alleging that Dharmalingam of the DMK assaulted them in the counting hall.

Mr. Dharmalingam and 50 other DMK members went in a procession to the station and complained that the Mr. Vincent and two others attacked the DMK members and destroyed 14 ballots.

Of the four contestants in the election, all women, Rajammal, supported by the DMK, was declared elected. She polled 452 votes. Eswari (backed by the AIADMK) got 325 votes.
