KOZHIKODE, SEPT. 28. The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, today indicated that the United Democratic Front (UDF) Government was not averse to go ahead with the special recruitment drive based on the Narendran Commission Report. The State Government was committed to providing social justice to all communities. Top priority would be accorded to the Narendran Commission report. A Sub-Committee of the UDF was looking into it, the Chief Minister said while inaugurating a function organised to commemorate the 21st death anniversary of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader and former Chief Minister, C. H. Mohammed Koya, at the Town hall this evening. The function was organised by the State unit of the Muslim Youth League (MYL), the youth wing of the IUML. Mr. Chandy's announcement, during his first visit to Kozhikode today after he became the Chief Minister, assumes significance in the background of the recent love-hate relationship between the IUML and the Congress party on various issues, especially on the contentious matter of implementing a special recruitment based on the Narendran Commission report.
Social justice
His announcement can also be seen as an attempt to smoothen the alleged estranged relationship between the Congress party and the Muslim community. Earlier the MYL State president, Panakkad Syed Sadiqali Shihab Thangal, and the general secretary, K. M. Shaji, in their speeches asked the Chief Minister to go ahead with the Narendran Commission recommendations. Mr. Chandy also said that he dwelt upon the topic of providing social justice since the MYL leaders had mentioned in their speeches on the Narendran Commission report. Paying rich tributes to C. H. Mohammed Koya, the Chief Minister said even his political detractors had not considered him as his opponent.'' He said that the IUML leader had acted based on practical wisdom. It was he who took a decision to give representation to the student community in the Syndicate and the Senate. This was included in the Calicut University Act framed in 1967. Malappuram district had made significant progress in the field of education because of his contributions. His memories still lingers in the social, poltical and cultural scape of Kerala,'' he added.
