Irrigation project to be inaugurated in January

PALAKKAD, SEPT. 28. The Water Resources Minister, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, has said that the Kanjirapuzha irrigation project will be commissioned on January 1, 2005.

Talking to presspersons after a meeting on the irrigation and drinking water projects to be taken up in the district, here on Monday, the Minister said a monitoring committee would be set up to speed up the work on the Palakapandi irrigation project.

The Minister said the Kuriyarkutty-Karapara multipurpose project at Nelliyampathy will be taken up if it could be implemented at a lower cost. The project is estimated to cost nearly Rs.180 crores.

He said that steps would be taken to get Kerala's share of water from the inter-State Parambikulam-Aliyar Project for irrigation under the Chittur project. The next meeting of MPs from the State would discuss the matter.

The Minister said that 20 check dams would be constructed in the Bharathapuzha in the district. There are schemes to dig 260 tubewells and repair 325 old ones.

A water supply scheme for Vadakarapathy panchayat in Chittur taluk would be implemented at a cost of Rs.2 crores.

The meeting held at the Town Hall was attended by MPs, MLAs, panchayat presidents, the District Collector and officials of the Water Resources Department.

The Minister's visit to the district and the meeting to discuss the irrigation and drinking water projects come in the wake of the district having declared drought-affected.
