KOLLAM, SEPT. 28. Even as the State Government has launched a crackdown on online lottery centres, a deal struck by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) with lottery agents to operate online lottery centres at bus depots all over the State continues to remain valid. On the basis of an agreement reached between the two parties one-and-a-half years ago, online lottery centres had begun functioning at the KSRTC depots at Thampanoor and East Fort in Thiruvananthapuram and at Kottarakara and Karunagapally in Kollam. However, the Karunagapally centre was closed down soon afterwards in view of poor revenue. The lottery centres at Thampanoor, East Fort and Kottarakara continued to function.
Temporarily closed
Rafi, a lottery dealer in Thiruvananthapuram, when contacted over phone, said that following the crackdown on lottery sales, the three centres at the KSRTC depots had been temporarily closed. The KSRTC authorities had entered into the deal with lottery agents on the latter's initiative. In fact, the KSRTC viewed the lottery centres as additional means of revenue. As per the deal, each lottery centre functioning from a KSRTC depot should pay either a minimum rent of Rs.5,000 a month or 20 per cent commission on the sales, whichever was higher. This meant that the share to the KSRTC from online lottery centres operating from its depots was Rs.5,000 or more. KSRTC officials at Thampanoor and Kottarakara, when contacted, confirmed that online lottery centres were operating from the depots.
