By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, SEPT. 28. The Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to celebrate the 61st birthday of the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, B.S. Yediyurappa, on a grand scale on October 1.

The former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, will attend the function.

Announcing this at a press conference here today, the Shivajinagar MLA, Katta Subramanya Naidu, said that 50,000 people were likely to attend the function to be organised at the Palace Grounds.

Mr. Naidu said that the party wanted to felicitate Mr. Yediyurappa, considering his struggle for the cause of farmers, last year itself but could not do it because of the elections and other reasons.

He said that the party had chalked out a yearlong programme to highlight the problems of the farmers and the reasons for many of them committing suicide, which was continuing even after the new Government took over. The date on which the programme would be launched would be announced after the Bidar Lok Sabha byelection.

He said that Mr. Yediyurappa and other leaders had visited the families of the 38 farmers who committed suicide after N. Dharam Singh became Chief Minister and gave them whatever financial support the party could.

Mr. Naidu said that a committee, headed by Aravind Limbavalli, MLC, would conduct an inquiry into the suicide of farmers.

The party State unit vice-president and MLC, Ramachandra Gowda, said that the function was not to felicitate Mr. Yediyurappa, but to highlight his struggle in alleviating the sufferings of the farmers.

The party workers would distribute fruits and food to patients in hospitals on the occasion.

Asked about the expenditure and finances for the function, Mr. Naidu said that a pandal put up for some other purpose in the Palace Grounds would be used for the function.

Other expenditure would be met by party leaders and workers, he added.

The party national president. M. Venkaiah Naidu; the state unit president, Ananth Kumar, MP; the former Chief Ministers S.R. Bommai and S. Bangarappa; the former Ministers Haranahalli Ramaswamy, V.S.
