LUCKNOW, SEPT. 28. At least 26 people were killed and 40 others injured in separate road accidents in Uttar Pradesh during the last 24 hours, police said today. Police said eight people were killed and seven injured when a vehicle carrying 16 people, hit a tree in Ghosi area of Mau district here this morning. The vehicle, which was coming from Jharkhand en route to Gorakhpur, hit the tree at around 5 am, killing eight people on the spot. Meanwhile, the seven injured had been rushed to hospital. In another incident in Jhansi district today, eight people were killed and seven others injured when a jeep fell into the Patrai river under Toli Fatehpur area. According to police, the driver apparently lost control over the speeding vehicle and it fell into the river. Seven injured have been rushed to a hospital. In the third incident in Etawah district last night, five people were killed yesterday while one died today and six were injured when a bus hit a stationery vehicle on the Etawah-Bharthana road. Police said the accident occurred near the Hathnauli village, in which four people killed on the spot. The injured were rushed to hospital, where one more person Shahbuddin (35) succumbed to his injuries. Meanwhile, police have seized the bus and arrested its driver. Reports from Faizabad said a woman died and 18 others were injured when a tractor-trolley they were travelling in to attend a Bahujan Samaj Party rally fell into a ditch in the Inayat Nagar area of the district today. All the injured were reported to be critical and have been admitted to the district hospital here. According to reports reaching here from Pratapgarh, two people died and two others were seriously injured in separate road accidents in the district today. In one incident, bus conductor Babloo alias Merajuddin (18) died while Kuldip (30) and Raju (25) injured when a private bus collided head-on with a truck near the Allahabad-Faizabad road. In another mishap, 11-year-old Pawan died after falling from a tractor in the Maisam village of the district. A man died after being hit by a speeding vehicle in the Sarojini Nagar area of Lucknow today. -- UNI
