SSP summoned for shielding `killer'

SRINAGAR, SEPT. 28. The Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has summoned Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) to appear before it on October 20 in connection with the allegation that police was shielding a counter insurgent involved in a murder and threatening an eyewitness in the case.

An SHRC spokesman said the SSP has been summoned to explain his position regarding the allegations that police was shielding the counter insurgent involved in the killing of a civilian. The Commission's directive came on a petition that one Sher-ud-din, a resident of Kupwara, was killed by a counter insurgent Nazir Ahmad Ganai who was working with the local unit of the police.

He said the Commission came to know that the police was mounting pressure on the eyewitnesses to retract from their earlier statement that Nazir was involved in the killing of Sher-ud-din.

He said the Commission said that no police officer would be allowed to misuse his official position to pressurise the eyewitnesses and next of the kin of the deceased.

The spokesman said taking serious note of the allegation, the Commission said if it was proved, the police would be punished. The complainants, who are also the eyewitnesses in the case, had deposed before the Commission that the accused was threatening them to withdraw their statements against him. They further said that two senior police officers of Sogam and Kupwara have threatened them to withdraw the case or face the consequences.

They said Sher-ud-din was shot dead by Nazir after he refused to pay him Rs 20,000. -- UNI
