Uttar Pradesh
MAHARAJGANJ (UTTAR PRADESH), SEPT. 28 . The 24-km-long tram track in Uttar Pradesh's Laxmipur Forests now leads to nowhere. What was once touted as Asia's only forest tram service today lies in a neglected and dilapidated state. Hari Ahmed, a resident of Laxmipur said that these tracks, constructed in 1923-24, remained in operation till 1986. Now the bogies and engines lies rusted and piled up on each other. ``There are four engines, three are completely damaged but one if repaired can be restarted, there was no security to look after these materials,'' said Ahmed. Meanwhile, Mahendra Singh, the district forest officer of Maharajganj, says that financial constraints are preventing him from reactivating the service. ``The repair of the broken rails will itself cost crores of rupees. Plans can be made, but finance will be a problem. If the project is associated with eco-tourism, then the trams can be utilised,'' he claims. -- ANI
