Vijayawada
By Our Special Correspondent
VIJAYAWADA, SEPT. 28. After the initial dilly-dallying, the State Government has decided to release water to the Zone II of Krishna delta comprising upland areas like Mylavaram, Tiruvuru, Jaggaiahpet and other areas from the Nagarjunasagar project.
Low water levels
Announcing this at a meeting organised in connection with the dedication of the National Highway stretch between Nandigama and Ibrahimpatnam to the nation, the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said the Government was aware of the fact that the water levels in Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar projects were low and it was difficult to even ensure water supply to Zone I. However, keeping in view the interests of the farmers of upland areas, it was decided to release water to save the standing crop.
More schemes
"We know that water should be ensured till the end of October to save the standing crop. We are hopeful that the nature will cooperate with us and we will receive good rainfall soon," he saidreiterating his Government's commitment for the welfare of the poor and downtrodden. Explaining various programmes launched by his Government, he said orders were issued for providing loans to DWCRA women at reduced interest rates in tune with the promise made by the Congress before the elections. The Government was also planning to extend Rs. 3 to 4 crores loans in every mandal to provide livelihood to women. Also, Rs. 500 crores assistance was sought from Nabard to help make barren lands distributed among Dalit families cultivable.
Concern for Masula
The Chief Minister was particularly concerned about the "neglect" meted out to the district headquarters Machilipatnam over several years. So, the Government had decided to accord top priority to the infrastructure development of the port-town, he said. The Government took up with the Centre the issue of converting the Vijayawada - Bandar road into a four-lane along with development of the Machilipatnam port.
