Kramnik begins well

BRISSAGO (SWITZERLAND), SEPT. 28. A sensational win with black pieces was followed by a sensible draw with white. Vladimir Kramnik made an excellent start to his title-defence in the Dannemann World classical chess championship against Peter Leko here. Monday was the first rest day in the 14-game battle, and in these early days, Kramnik has the upper hand.

The Russian is leading 1.5-0.5. He will retain the crown if he manages to take his score to seven, as a tie in the match is enough for him, while for Leko, nothing less than a victory would do. So the pressure is on the Hungarian to bounce back into the match with a win before long.

He showed his intentions clear in Sunday's drawn second game, opting for a sharp line in Ruy Lopez.
