Survey for database on schools soon

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, SEPT. 28. The third annual survey for creation of a database on schools, District Information System for Education (DISE), will begin in the State next month.

The nationwide exercise, taken up under the Education For All (Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan-SSA), seeks to create an exhaustive database, including the number of students , drop outs, success ratio, teacher strength, infrastructure, grants availed and on-going welfare schemes. The DISE would form the basis for preparing the plan document for the next financial year towards achieving the overall objectives of the Education for All programme.

This year the exercise would cover students from lower kindergarten to standard XII; hitherto only those up to standard VIII were taken into account. The exercise would be carried out through field officers of the Education Department, including Assistant District Project Coordinators, Block Resource Centre Supervisors and Assistant Educational Officers.

The details in information forms, to be filled by the field workers with the assistance of the heads of schools, would be computerised. Details on unrecognised schools would also be compiled separately this year.

`Ensure accuracy of data'

At the inauguration of a State-level orientation workshop for the key resource trainers here today, the Joint Director-I, SSA, Chennai, G. Arivoli, said the exercise would be completed before December. Five key resource persons from each district were attending the programme and they in turn would train the field officers at the district and block levels. Mr. Arivoli urged the trainees to ensure complete authenticity of the information collected.

The Joint Director-II, SSA, Chennai, R. Elangovan, said Education Department officials from nine States would visit Tamil Nadu between October 4 and 6 to study the implementation of the Education For All programme. The State was serving as a model, he said.

So far Rs. 126 crores had been released in the State this year against the sanctioned outlay of Rs. 433 crores, he said.

The DISE would provide an important baseline data for better need-based planning next year. The Chief Educational Officer, Tiruchi, V.C. Rameswara Murugan, said the exercise would be an important base document to lift the quality of school education to international standards.
