VCD grey market wears deserted look
By T.S. Shankar
CHENNAI,
SEPT. 28.
Monday's announcement by the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, on introduction of stern punishment for VCD piracy seems to have had the desired response in the city's grey markets, including on Ritchie Street.
Most of the business outlets, which were doing "roaring business selling pirated VCDs" wore a deserted look and VCD players are being sold for a song.
There were some still selling pirated VCDs, including the recent Tamil movie "Vasool Raja MBBS" at Rs. 50 each.
Enquiries on Ritchie Street, especially with those engaged in selling VCDs, reveal that they would soon switch to some other business following the new measures announced by the Chief Minister.
The Chief Minister's announcement has instilled a sense of fear among the VCD sellers.
In a statement, Vijaykant, president of South India Nadigar Sangam, said the Chief Minister's decision to deal with VCD piracy with an iron hand would save the Tamil cinema industry.
