Thanjavur

THANJAVUR, SEPT. 28. Nearly 1,500 agricultural workers and farmers, including 300 women, of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam and the Tamil Nadu Kisan Sabha, affiliated to the CPI (M), were arrested today, when they tried picket panchayat union offices in several parts of Thanjavur district, to press their demands. They were demanding the implementation of the Kolappan Committee recommendations, waiving of all loans of farmers and issue of fresh loans without any security and disbursement of drought relief.
Nagapattinam
In Nagapattinam district, nearly 1,000 farmers and farm workers, including 165 women, were when they tried to picket the panchayat union and taluk offices at Nagapattinam, Keezhaiyur, Mayiladuturai, Kuthalam and Sirkazhi. The Tamil Nadu Kisan Sabha general secretary, K. Balakrishnan, was arrested at Nagapattinam.
Tiruvarur
In Tiruvarur district, 800 farm labourers, including 150 women, were arrested. They were released in the evening.
Pudukottai
Over 600 members of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, affiliated to the CPI (M), were arrested in Pudukottai district. The cadres were arrested at Pudukottai, Aranthangi, Gandarvakottai, Keeranur, Avudaiyarkoil and Alangudi. They were released in the evening, the police said.
Perambalur
Around 300 members were held at Perambalur, Sendurai, Tirumanur and Jayamkondam. A large number of farmers, led by the Agricultural Labourers Association secretary, Raja, tried to stage an agitation at Jayamkondam.
