German institute celebrates silver jubilee

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, SEPT. 28. "The world is turning out to be a global village and knowledge of major languages is becoming an increasing necessity. German is the most commonly used language in the world after English and there is great potential and scope if one learns the language," Prachi Sharma, Director, Language Department, Max Mueller Bhavan, Chennai, said. She was speaking at the silver jubilee celebrations of the Moegling Institute of German Language in the city today.

The exchange of students, researchers, and scholarship programmes had strengthened the relationship between the two countries, she said. Around 80,000 German tourists visited India every year. Indian heritage and cultural history was proving to be a major curiosity in German universities. The two countries are discovering each other on a day-to-day basis, Ms. Sharma said.

Association

K. Sundar Naik, Registrar of Mangalore University, said the university was keen to be associated with the Moegling Institute in recognition of the services it had rendered. Noting that this was the only German institution to be affiliated to the university, he said it indicated the good work carried out by the institute. The institute, which is affiliated to Mangalore University, is also affiliated to Max Mueller Bhavan, Chennai.
