MANGALORE, SEPT. 28. The First Additional District and Sessions Court on Tuesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering his wife. The accused, Kishore, assaulted his wife, Jayalaxmi, on April 26, 2003, and then set her ablaze. The victim died in hospital later that day. F.H. Havargi, First Additional Public Prosecutor, who pleaded on behalf of the State, said the accused had married Jayalaxmi, daughter of Sumathi and Devendra, on April 26, 1998. Kishore was a painter by profession while Jayalaxmi worked as a matron at Kasturba Medical College Hospital, Attavar. The couple had two children.
Debt
Kishore, an alcoholic, was reportedly in debt. He used to pester Jayalaxmi to obtain a loan from the hospital where she was working to clear the debts, Mr. Havargi said and added that he used to beat her when she refused to do so. Jayalaxmi, on one occasion, even complained to the police and sought protection, he said. On the day of the incident, the accused sent Jayalaxmi to her parent's house at Chilmbi demanding that she get him money. When his in-laws refused to accede to the demand, he forcibly took her to their home at Neermarga in the Mangalore Rural Police Station limits and beat her, Mr. Havargi said. He then set her on fire. Jayalaxmi suffered 80 per cent burns. Mr. Havargi said the prosecution relied on eyewitness accounts of Jayalaxmi's neighbours, including Stella Rego, Meenakshi, and D'Souza, who rushed to the couple's house on hearing her screams.
