CHENNAI, SEPT. 28. A three-day exhibition on bio-diversity was inaugurated at the National Bio Diversity Authority premises at Neelankarai today.

Ecological systems such as terrestrial, marine, freshwater eco-systems and information on Bio-diversity Act 2002 are on display, says K. Venkataraman, Member Secretary, National Bio-diversity Authority (NBA).

The programme is aimed at creating awareness on the richness and importance of the bio-diversity of the country and the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests had provided Rs 1.5 lakhs to conduct such awareness programmes in the city, he said.

The NBA was established in 2003 under the Biological Diversity Act 2002. Regulating access to biological resources of the country, to conserve and to ensure sustainable use of biological diversity; respecting and protecting the knowledge of local communities related to bio-diversity; conservation and development of areas of importance from the standpoint of biological diversity by declaring them as biological diversity heritage sites; protection and rehabilitation of threatened species are the main objectives of the NBA.

Inaugurating the exhibition, T.N. Ananthakrishnan, former Director, Zoological Survey of India, said more than a decade ago one was able to sight birds such as the common bee-eater, jungle babblers, and sparrows in the backyards of city houses. But, due to ecological changes they were not to be seen these days, he said.

S. Theodore Baskaran, former Chief Postmaster General, said bio-diversity was nothing but the life forms around one's own house. Protecting heritage monuments alone would not suffice; living organisms such as birds, insects and trees had to be provided equal protection, he said.

As part of the exhibition, the NBA would conduct painting, elocution and essay competitions for students of classes IX, X, XI and XII. All the participants would get a certificate, added Dr. Venkataraman.

The exhibition is open to visitors everyday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. at 475, 9th South Cross Street, Kapaleeswar Nagar, Neelankarai.
