KANCHEEPURAM, SEPT. 28. The State Government has decided to popularise Chettinadu, Pitchavaram and Pazhaverkadu as tourist spots, the Tourism Minister, A. Miller, has said. With Tamil Nadu attracting nearly 30 per cent of the foreign tourists visiting India, there was immense scope for promoting tourism in the State, he said at the World Tourism Day celebrations here on Monday. Mr. Miller hoped that by identifying elegant houses in Chettinadu, lush mangroves in Pitchavaram and the sea-side lake at Pazhaverkadu as tourist attractions, and creating sufficient infrastructure, the number of tourists visiting the State would increase.
"Tamil Nadu is the only State which has a judicious mix of various types of tourist spots, as noted by the Chief Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa. There are many ancient temples housing rich and marvellous sculptures, neatly designed and exquisitely constructed structures of places of worship of other religions, mangrove forests, wildlife and bird sanctuaries, hill resorts and beautiful beaches," he added. The Handloom Minister, V. Somasundaram, said the efforts to promote tourism in had provided direct employment to nearly 91 lakh persons and indirect employment to 124 lakh persons in the State. The Commissioner of Tourism and managing director, Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC), Sakthikanta Das, said last year nearly 9 lakh foreign tourists, in addition to 2.70-lakh domestic visitors, visited the State.
