CHENNAI, SEPT. 28. A bus shelter in Chromepet is now the site of tussle between the DMK and the AIADMK. State Social Welfare Minister, B. Valarmathi, laid the foundation stone for a bus shelter in Chromepet today even as officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) are working overtime to organise a similar function in Tambaram on Thursday. Pallavaram municipality officials say the proposal to construct the bus shelter was passed during a council meeting in August last year. Ms. Valarmathi, Member of Legislative Assembly from Alandur, sanctioned a sum of Rs. 28 lakhs from her constituency development fund, according to E. Dhan Singh, Chairman, Pallavaram Municipality. The Municipality comes under Ms. Valarmathi's constituency. Meanwhile, NHAI officials in Indira Nagar, Adyar, said they were not aware of the function in Chromepet this morning. All that a senior official had to say was that a foundation stone laying ceremony for a bus shelter in Chromepet would be held at Tambaram on Thursday. "We are working against time to be ready in time for the function," the official said. An invitation from the NHAI states that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president, M. Karunanidhi, will be laying the foundation stone in the presence of Union Ministers T.R. Baalu and Dayanidhi Maran. Foundation stones for constructing pedestrian subways on the Grand Southern Trunk Road in Tambaram, Pallavaram and Alandur, would also be laid during the function. Mr. Dhan Singh said the land where the bus stop is situated belonged to the Municipality and they had the records to prove it. "Nobody from the NHAI has approached us with any proposal," he said. The proposed shelter is for the bus stop on the Western side.
