CHENNAI, SEPT. 28. The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) candidate won yesterday's violence-marred Chennai Corporation ward seven byelection by a huge margin. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) won the ward byelection in Salem. In Chennai, K. Shanmugham (AIADMK) polled 8,680 votes, while the DMK's T.V. Muthukrishnan could manage only 1,457, fewer than the number of invalid votes (1,568). In Salem, K. Govindan (DMK) won from ward 60, polling 2,586 votes. The AIADMK also won the byelection to both posts of municipal chairman C. Niranjan (9,287 votes) defeated K. Nagarajan (MDMK 7,739) in Tirumangalam, while R.S. Ramamurthy (6,741) defeated R.G. Rathinam of the DMK (5,167) in Ramanathapuram. The Bharatiya Janata Party's M.S. Karunanidhi polled 3,679 votes here. Of the 16 seats for municipal councillors across the urban local bodies, the AIADMK won seven, the DMK six, and the Congress, the BJP and independents shared one each.
Rural local bodies
In the rural local bodies, of the three district panchayat ward member seats, for which elections were conducted, the AIADMK, the DMK and the Pattali Makkal Katchi won one each in Cuddalore, Thanjavur and Vellore. In the panchayat union ward member elections, the AIADMK won 28 of the 54 seats. The DMK won 17, MDMK - 3, Congress - 2, CPI (M) and BJP - one each and independents - two.
