Agricultural produce godown at Thuvakudi planned

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUCHI, SEPT. 28. The State Government has planned to set up a godown on Electronic Estate premises in Thuvakudi near here for storing agricultural produce and other inputs for agro-based units promoted in rural areas under the New Anna Marumalarchi Thittam (NAMT) in the State. This is the first of its kind in the State and would be promoted by the Department of Industries and Commerce.

The Tamil Nadu Industrial Cooperative (TAICO) Bank, run by the Department of Industries and Commerce, has already sanctioned Rs.50 lakhs for setting up the godown, which would have a storage capacity of 6,000 square feet. The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development has come forward to provide a subsidy for the project.

The godown would help agricultural graduates, who were members of the industrial cooperative society and who ran agro-clinics, to procure agricultural produce at a reasonable rate. Construction works would commence soon, S. Kandasamy, general manager (in-charge), District Industries Centre, said addressing a joint meeting of the Tiruchi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (TIDITSSIA) and the BHEL Small Industries Association (BHELSIA) here on Sunday.

The Department of Industries and Commerce has offered to train 500 workers employed in Small Scale Industries (SSI) in the State. Each person would be charged a fee of Rs.1,000 for the training, which would be imparted at Tiruchi Regional Engineering College - Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park (TREC - STEP) here. While the department would provide Rs.500, the remainder would be borne by the industrial units.

The department has also offered to train entrepreneurs, also at TREC STEP, at a cost of Rs.10,000. The department and the bankers would provide 50 per cent of the fee. The programme would be of great help to second-generation entrepreneurs.

Mr. Kandasamy said that according to the all India census of SSIs, over 150 sick units were identified in the district. The Centre has proposed to engage non-governmental organisations with an exposure to industries to study the cause of sickness to revive the units. Voluntary services of SSI organisations would also be used.

The president of the TIDITSSIA, Sridharan, and the president of the BHELSIA, Rajappa Rajkumar, also spoke.
