THIRUVANANTHAPURAM. Sept. 28. The Minister for Water Resources, Thiruvanchur Radhakrishnan, has said that all ongoing drinking water projects for which local bodies had deposited money with the Kerala Water Authority (KWA), would be commissioned within the next six months.
Review meeting held
He was speaking to mediapersons after a district-level review meeting of drinking water projects in the district, chaired by the Minister. The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC)-aided drinking water scheme is scheduled for commissioning in 2007. However, talks would be held with the officials concerned to find out whether the project could be commissioned a year earlier. The Government would also try to include a scheme for dredging the Aruvikkara dam in the JBIC project, he said. Deadlines were also set for the commissioning of other drinking water projects in various other parts of the district. The Vithura-Kuttichal drinking water scheme would be commissioned by November 30, this year and the special drinking water scheme for Kuttichal panchayat, by January 1, 2005. The remaining work on the scheme to supply water to the Varkala municipality would be speeded up so as to enable commissioning by November, this year. The Thrikkannapuram project would be commissioned on April 14, 2005. The Karavalam-Alamcode drinking water scheme in Kilimanoor would be commissioned in December 2005, the Minister said.
Helpline
Mr. Radhakrishnan said he had sought a feasibility report from the KWA for setting up helplines throughout the State to help the public report leaks and to get information about drinking water supply in their locality. The helpline would be set up in a couple of centres on an experimental basis and, if found successful, extended throughout the State. Most of the people's representatives who participated in today's review meeting were highly critical of what they termed as inaction on the part of the KWA in implementing sanctioned water supply schemes.
