Construction worker raped, murdered

BANGALORE, SEPT. 28. A 35-year-old woman was raped and strangled, allegedly by two persons from Pappareddypalya, Madhu (23) and Venkatesh (21), on Saturday.

The accused, who were arrested by the Jnanabharathi police on Monday, allegedly threatened the victim, a construction worker, with dire consequences and raped her. Fearing that she would inform the police, they strangled her, the police said.

The victim's body was recovered from the Mine and Geology Department Layout in Pappareddypalya. The police said Madhu had earlier been arrested on charges of rape.

Youth drowned

Santosh alias Rajeev (22) drowned in a well on Hebbal Ring Road on Tuesday morning when he was immersing a Ganesha idol.

Santosh, of Hebbal, could not swim and no one else was present, the police said. The Hebbal police have registered a case.

Man electrocuted

Ramesh (37) from Chikkamallur was electrocuted when he was removing wires from a generator after the immersion of a Ganesha idol in Channapatna police station limits on Monday night.

Ramesh and his friends had taken the idol in a tractor and immersed the idol in Thattekere. They had used a generator for illumination, and Ramesh was removing wires from it when he was electrocuted. His body was shifted to Channapatna Government Hospital for post-mortem.

Bid-to-murder charge

A retired HAL employee, Subramanya, allegedly attacked his brother, Nataraj (59) and nephew, Srinivas (39), with a chopper over a property dispute in Hanumanthanagar police station limits on Tuesday morning. The victims, who suffered head injuries, were admitted to a private hospital and are reportedly out of danger.

Around 7.30 a.m., the accused went to Nataraj's house in Agara, Sarjapur Road, and picked a quarrel over a site in Hanumanthanagar. During the argument, he allegedly attacked Nataraj and Srinivas. Subramanya lodged a complaint with the Hanumanthanagar police station that he was attacked. However, the police said they found that he had attacked his brother and his nephew and arrested him.

The Hanumanthanagar police have registered a case of attempt to murder.

Attempt to fell tree

Some persons made an attempt to cut a sandalwood tree at Saraipalya in Hennur police station limits in the early hours of Tuesday.

The complainant, Jayagopal, said he woke up around 2 a.m. to find some persons felling a sandalwood tree in his premises. They ran away when the beat police constables arrived, responding to his call for help.

Arrested

The City Crime Branch (CCB) police on Sunday arrested 11 persons on the charge of gambling at a lodge in Upparpet police station limits. The police gave the names of the accused as Mohan (32), Murugan (21), Srinivas (32), Shankar (28), Selvaraj (40), Raghu (20), Shanmugam (29), Suresh, Murali (30), Krishnaiah (44) and Chandrashekhar (25).

The CCB officials arrested Kumaresh G. (21), owner of a video centre in Cottonpet, and seized 550 pirated VCDs and MP3s of Hindi, English and Telugu films, worth Rs. 70,100, after a raid on Monday.

Chain snatched

The Chickpet police on Tuesday arrested a 30-year-old man who was caught by the public while allegedly trying to flee after snatching a gold chain from Soni Bai (65) of Basavanna Temple Street in Chickpet. The accused was identified as Srinivas, a goldsmith from Bannerghatta Road.

The police said Ms. Soni Bai had returned from her morning walk at about 6.30 a.m. and was entering her house when the accused came to her, asked for food, and allegedly snatched her gold chain.
