Udupi
By Our Staff Correspondent
UDUPI, SEPT. 29. The MLA, K. Raghupati Bhat, on Wednesday said the former Chief Minister, S. Bangarappa, would participate in the valedictory function of the district toddy tappers' conference at Brahmavar on October 4.
Cooperative socities
Mr. Bhat told presspersons here that toddy tappers were facing a crisis and the Government should release Rs. 10 crores for their welfare. The Government should start cooperative societies for toddy tappers. It should provide grants to these cooperative societies to purchase sites and construct their own buildings. He said the Government should provide cold storage units to preserve toddy and evolve novel methods to market it. New technology should be made available to toddy tappers. Toddy tappers' societies should be allowed to start new marketing centres. Housing sites should be provided to toddy tappers as was being done for fishermen. The Government should provide a relief of Rs. 1 lakh if any toddy tapper met with an accident. A federation of toddy tappers' societies should be formed in the district on the lines of the milk producers union. He said a seminar, which would focus on the problems of toddy tappers, would be held the same day. This would be followed by a procession. The other guests who will participate in the conference include the MPs, Manorama Madhwaraj, D.V. Sadananda Gowda and D.C. Srikantappa, the MLC, V.S. Acharya, the MLAs, H. Srinivas Shetty, Sunil Kumar and Lalaji Mendan, and the Vice President of State unit of the BJP, A.G. Kodgi. Mr. Bhat said the party had lodged a complaint with the Deputy Commissioner against the order of the Electoral Registration Officer and Assistant Commission, Madan G. Naik, deleting the name of the MLC, Balakrishna Bhat, from the voters' list of Udupi city. Mr. Balakrishna Bhat had sought the inclusion of his name in the voters' list, as he wanted to operate in the teachers' constituency from which he was elected with Udupi as his headquarters. He said Udupi was a part of the teachers' constituency. Mr. Balakrishna, who was earlier a permanent resident of Idya near Surathkal in Dakshina Kannada district had written to the Electoral Registration Officer there to delete his name. But Mr. Naik had not served any notice to Mr. Balakrishna Bhat nor agreed to postpone the hearing by one day as urged by him (Mr. Balakrishna Bhat). Mr. Naik's order was unilateral. The BJP would challenge it before an appropriate legal authority. There was no truth in the rumours that the BJP was seeking inclusion of the MLC's name in the voters' list with an eye on the elections to the posts of the president and vice-president of the Udupi City Municipal Council. The BJP enjoyed a comfortable majority in the municipal council, Mr. Bhat said. K. Shankar Poojary, K. Srinivas Poojary, Devadas Suvarna, Dinakar Shetty and Narasimha Nayak, BJP leaders, were present.
