Kuvempu birth centenary celebrations from Saturday

DHARWAD, SEPT. 29. The birth centenary of poet laureate, the late Kuvempu, is to be observed by the Karnatak University on Saturday and Sunday, according to A. Murigeppa, Coordinator of the Kuvempu Birth Centenary Celebration Committee.

G.S. Shivarudrappa, poet and literary critic, will inaugurate the celebration on Saturday and deliver the keynote address.

He will also release a book written by Ko Channabasappa, writer and retired District and Sessions Judge, on "Kuvempu Sahitya: Vaicharikate; Samajika Nishte''.

Gurulinga Kapase, former Chairman of the Karnataka Sahitya Academy, will chair the first session, devoted to "Kuvempu and his poetry'', in which S.M. Vrishabhendra Swamy, Professor (retired) of Kannada of Karnatak University, H.S. Raghavendra Rao of the National College, Bangalore, and K.R. Durgadas of the Karnatak University will present their views on the different aspects of Kuvempu's works.

Rajendra Chenni of Kuvempu University will preside over the second session to be held on Sunday, on the theme "Vasahatushahi hinneleyalli Kuvempu Vaicharikate''.

Mr. Channabasappa will be the chief guest at the valedictory function to be held under the presidentship of Giraddi Govindaraj, member of the Executive Committee of the Central Sahitya Academy.

A poets' meet will be held and "Shudra Tapaswi'', a drama written by Kuvempu, will be staged on Saturday.

A music tribute to the memory of Kuvempu would be paid by the students of the Post Graduate Department of Music of the Karnatak University and of the University College of Music the same day.

This session will be presided over by Y.K. Muddukrishna, Chairman, Karnataka Sugama Sangeeth Parishat.
