Jacob upsets Prakash

By Our Special Correspondent

GURGAON, SEPT. 29. Qualifier Tariq Jacob toppled the No. 1 seed Sumit Prakash Gupta 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the pre-quarterfinals of the Adidas ITF junior grade `IV' tennis tournament at the NTA Complex here on Wednesday.

It was an impressive effort from the 15-year-old Jacob, as the 1170th-ranked showed considerable grit in fighting it out against the 249th-ranked Sumit. It was, however, not a surprise as Jacob had made it to the semifinals of the last tournament in Chennai after having made the main draw by winning three rounds in the qualifying event.

It was only his third tournament in the ITF circuit for Jacob, and he had lost in the second round of the qualifying event in his first tournament in Sri Lanka earlier this month. In other matches, fourth-seeded Anshuman Dutta had to struggle past Ronak Mehta in three sets while Krishna Karsolia cruised through for the loss of one game to set up a clash with Anshuman. Tejasvi Rao, Kaushik Raju, Prateek Shantaraju and Vivek Shokeen moved into the quarterfinals without much fuss.
