Stolen goods worth Rs. 1.05 crores recovered

VILLUPURAM, SEPT. 29. The Inspector General of Police (North), S.R. Jangid, today handed over recovered items worth over Rs. 1.05 crores, to their owners at a function here.

The stolen property from Cuddalore and Villupuram districts was recovered between January and September this year. The split-up of the recovery was: Villupuram - Rs 80.99 lakhs, and, Cuddalore - Rs 25 lakhs.

The articles included panchaloha idols worth Rs. 5 lakhs stolen from the Sri Navaneetha Venugopala Swamy temple at Brahmadesam in Villupuram district on January 29. The idols are believed to date back to the 18th century.

Another significant recovery was the 270 sovereigns of jewellery, worth about Rs. 12 lakhs, stolen from a house at Avalurpet in Villupuram.

Another breakthrough was the seizure of the truck laden with 80 television sets, worth Rs. 12 lakhs, which was hijacked by a gang from the Keelapalayam road junction on the Salem-Ulundurpet Road on January 21.

In another success, a car and 42 sovereigns of jewellery stolen after the owner was waylaid at Annamalai Nagar in Chidambaram. These have been recovered intact and restored to the owner.

Financial assistance

Mr. Jangid also disbursed financial assistance of Rs. 15,000 to 25 persons who had given up the arrack trade, and aid to families of police personnel who died in harness.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Sanjay Arora, thanked the district administration and the judiciary for their cooperation in bringing down the crime rate, and complimented the personnel for their hard work.

The Villupuram District Collector, Ka. Balachandran, said that this must be the highest recovery among the districts, outside Chennai.

He hailed the police for having taken intensive drive against illicit arrack trade and converting Pothuvai, Veerapandi, Eraiyur, Na.Kuppam and Kallanatham as arrack-free villages.

The Cuddalore district Superintendent of Police, K. Prem Kumar, said the recovery of the stolen items showed the hard work the police were putting in to detect crimes.

The Villupuram district SP, K. Periaiah, said the British era was termed Police Raj, but now the police were serving the people's cause round-the-clock.

Mr Periaiah said that following the stringent action taken against bootleggers, the north region emerged the top revenue earner in the State (through the sale of IMFL liquor), and Villupuram stood top in the region.
