Orissa

BHUBANESWAR, SEPT. 29. The day-long south Orissa bandh, called by the People's War, passed off peacefully today. The bandh evoked a mixed response as shops and business establishments remained closed in a few pockets, and life remained normal in most parts of the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati and Ganjam. The naxalites had called for the bandh demanding withdrawal of paramilitary forces from the affected districts, and withdrawal of cases against "innocent" tribals. No untoward incident was reported from any part of the naxalite-infested regions. To appease the Maoist rebel groups, the State Government had ordered withdrawal of cases against 162 naxalites on Monday. A day later it announced its intention to withdraw 1,513 minor cases against the tribals.
