TUMKUR, SEPT. 29. The Committee to Protect Interests of Owners of Shops in Municipal Councils in the State has urged the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah (who holds the Finance portfolio), to stop re-allotment of shops. N.S. Pandit Jawahar, committee secretary, told presspersons here on Tuesday that he and Fayazullah Khan, committee president, recently met Mr. Siddaramaiah and submitted a memorandum to him on the matter. Mr. Jawahar said over 30 lakh people in the State had been eking out their livelihood by running petty shops. He said while they had been paying rent promptly, a few owners of the shops in Old Bus Stand area in Tumkur attracted the wrath of the then Commissioner of the City Municipal Council, P. Manivannan, who issued them notices. His action was questioned in court, which ordered re-allotment of shops by auction. "A certain individual" recently filed a contempt of court petition in the High Court and it was scheduled to come up for hearing on October 14. Mr. Jawahar said the committee feared that the councils would act swiftly in deference to the court orders and re-allot all shops. "In a similar situation (when the Supreme Court ordered retrenchment of over 13,000 employees, who were appointed through rural weightage) the Government showed exemplary grace by filing a review petition before the court. The committee urged the Deputy Chief Minister to consider filing a review petition before the High Court in this case and safeguard the interests of over 30 lakh people."
