Instant registration scheme for service providers

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI. Sept. 29. The Department of Customs and Central Excise has claimed to have come out with what it calls a taxpayer-friendly scheme for instant registration of service providers. Local offices have released press notes in areas falling under their jurisdiction in a bid to create awareness among unregistered service providers to avail of the scheme and register on a "no-questions-asked" basis.

As per the scheme, any service provider can make a declaration to the department with regard to his past liabilities towards service tax and interest. "Without inquiry or questions, the department will accept the declaration and register the service provider on the spot. Legal proceedings against those approaching the department under this scheme will be waived, the note said.

The scheme is aimed at wooing into the 10 per cent service tax net 71 identified services. It will be in operation till October 30. Department officials pointed out that despite efforts, not many tax providers were coming forward to get registered, while many were evading the tax by "dubious means." It was in this context that it had announced rewards to those who provided genuine information leading to the unearthing of service tax evasion, they said.
