KOLLAM, SEPT. 29. The Kollam district administration has finalised elaborate community service-oriented programmes to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti this week. The celebrations include an exhibition of paintings on Gandhiji and various competitions for students. The celebrations will begin with a peace march to Gandhi Park on Kollam Beach. The painting exhibition, being organised by the Kerala chapter of the Indian Council of Gandhian Studies, will be held at the Taluk Cutchery Junction from October 2 to 4. Volunteers will clean schools and Government offices in the district from October 2 to 8. On October 5, an essay competition on Gandhian thoughts will be held at the District Panchayat hall. A poetry recitation competition would be held at the Collectorate Conference Hall and the TM Varghese Hall on the same day. The highlight of the celebrations would be an exhibition of cartoons on Gandhiji. The exhibition will be held at the TM Varghese Hall on October 11 and it would be inaugurated by the Kundara MLA, Kadavur Sivadasan. The valedictory function would be inaugurated by the Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran. The noted critic, Sukumar Azhikode, will deliver a talk on `Mahathmavinte Margam'. The programmes were formally announced by the District Collector, B. Sreenivas.
