HYDERABAD, SEPT. 29. An ordinance substantially enhancing the monthly pension of former legislators has been promulgated by the Governor, S.S. Barnala. According to the ordinance, ex-MLAs and ex-MLCs will receive a minimum monthly pension of Rs. 4,000 for the first term or a part of it. This will be increased at the rate of Rs. 500 each year of service subject to a ceiling of Rs. 6,500. The enhanced pension will be effective from September 23, the day on which the Governor promulgated the Andhra Pradesh Payment of Salaries and Pension and Removal of Disqualifications (Amendment) Ordinance, 2004. Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh Former Legislators Forum has hailed the Government initiative in raising the pension for ex-MLAs who could not complete full-term from Rs. 400 to Rs. 4,000 per month but said that it was still less than the amount being paid in smaller States like Manipur, Assam and Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, the forum convenor, K. Subba Raju, thanked the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, for redressing the grievances of former legislators pertaining to their pension. He also welcomed his directions to officials enhancing the medical bill claims from Rs. 75,000 to Rs. 1 lakh for one time treatment for the former legislators.
