VISAKHAPATNAM, SEPT. 29. Candidates backed by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) trounced their Congress rivals by winning all the three Director posts of the Visakha Dairy for which polling was held on Wednesday. Kolla Katamayya, Dadi Mallu Naidu and Mopada Gangaraju were declared elected as they secured 503, 487 and 485 votes respectively. Candidates supported by the Congress -- Rajana Venkataramana (157 votes), Kalangi Chinnabbai (152) and Sunkara Venkatakrishna Giri (142) - fared poorly. Polling was held amid unprecedented security, which was stepped up after the polling on September 17 was disrupted by fisticuffs between rival groups of the Congress and the TDP. Police had to resort to lathicharge, leading to postponement of elections. A court also restrained four Congress MLAs and their supporters from interfering in Wednesday's election process. All entry points to the dairy complex were barricaded and a posse of policemen, led by senior officials, was present, overseeing the process. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 were also in force. The Police Commissioner, B. Prasada Rao, who made a visit, said that some 500 policemen were deployed to ensure smooth polling. The number of voters - presidents of milk societies in the three north coastal districts - with a majority of them from Visakhapatnam district, was 654. Under the Mutually Aided Cooperative Societies (MACS) Act, three directors of the dairy were to be elected every year.
Foolproof process
In the two polling booths set up for voting, a computer each was installed. Voters were allowed only if the laminated identity card issued matched the computerised one. The election process was almost over by noon with more than 600 turning up to vote.
