NEW DELHI, SEPT. 29. One thousand candidates have been selected for the National Talent Search scholarships this year, according to an announcement here by the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT). Aimed at identifying talented students at the end of Class X and nurturing them by providing financial help in the form of monthly scholarships and an annual book grant, these are now meant for science, social sciences, engineering, medicine and management courses. The awardees this year include 150 students from the Scheduled Castes and 75 from the Schedule Tribes category. Students can check the results on the website www.ncert.nic.in. The selection for the award of scholarships under the scheme was done in two stages. In the first stage, selection was done by individual States and Union Territories through a written examination conducted between October and December. On the basis of this examination, each State recommended a stipulated number of candidates corresponding to their quota to the NCERT for the second level examination. The second stage selection involved a written examination and interview for 1,000 scholarships. The NTS awardees continue to receive the scholarship up to Ph.D. level for pursuing education in basic science and social sciences and up to second degree level, should they decide to go in for professional courses like medicine, engineering and management.
