Dividend cheque presented

NEW DELHI SEPT. 29. NTPC-SAIL Power Company Pvt. Ltd. (NSPCL), a joint venture of NTPC and SAIL, has declared a dividend of Rs. 16 crores for the financial year 2003-04. The company earned a profit after tax of Rs. 23.99 crores with a gross turnover of Rs. 300.7 crores.

The Bhilai Electric Supply Company Pvt. Ltd. (BESCL), also a joint venture of NTPC and SAIL, has also declared a dividend of Rs. 2 crores for 2003-04. The company earned a profit after tax of Rs. 6.63 crores with a gross turnover of Rs. 153.98 crores.

The dividend cheque was presented to the Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC, C. P. Jain, by the Chairman of NSPCL and BESCL, B. N. Ojha, here today.

`Diabetes Mela' inaugurated

NEW DELHI SEPT. 29. The Sixth Annual Diabetes Health Mela, organised by the Delhi Diabetes Research Centre, will be inaugurated by the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, at Talkatora Garden here on October 1.

The three-day event will mark the start of a three-year Advocacy Campaign under the aegis of the ``Foundation for Young Diabetics (FYD)'', which will address the issue of diabetes in the youth. The Mela, which will have a free entry and will be open to visitors from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., will also include special sessions on yoga and physiotherapy, lectures on diet control, obesity and interactive question and answer sessions by experts.

The chairman of DDRC, Ashok Jhingan, said free blood sugar tests, and eye and heart check-ups will be conducted during the Mela, which would also offer solutions on health problems among diabetics and will provide glucometers, strips, diabetes profile tests, books and luncheons at subsidised rates.

NCC team back from Russia

NEW DELHI SEPT. 29. An NCC delegation which was in Russia from September 16 to 26 as a part of the Youth Exchange Programme returned home on Tuesday. The delegation led by Sanjay Pathak visited Moscow and Kursk region and interacted with the Russian cadets. During their trip, the cadets got an opportunity to study the history, culture and traditions of Russia.

Police custody for accused

NEW DELHI SEPT. 29. Delhi police today got custody of alleged Khalistan Liberation Front ultra Harnaik Singh, a proclaimed offender in the TADA case relating to the 11-year-old murder attempt on former Youth Congress Chief Maninder Singh Bitta.

Harnaik Singh alias Chhotu, resident of Jagaraon in Punjab, was arrested by the Fatehgarh police in an Arms Act case on August 13.

He was brought here on a production warrant issued by a city court and produced today before Designated TADA Judge J M Malik, who sent him to police custody till October 5.

Singh's name figures among the accused in the case for exploding an RDX fitted car in front of 5, Raisina Road in the afternoon on September 11, 1993.

The explosion, which claimed nine lives and injured another 29, was according to police, aimed at Bitta.

However, Bitta escaped unhurt.

Cultural programme organised

NEW DELHI SEPT. 29. To promote Indian classical music and culture among the youth, Vishwa Bharati Public School in Noida along with SPIC MACAY organised "Virasat - 2004'' on its campus this past Tuesday. Sitar maestro Debu Chaudhuri gave a lecture-cum-demonstration on the nuances of music and his deep romance with the sitar. The school Principal, Veena Bhasin, was present.

As part of "Virasat-2004"', the school has also organised an eight-day yoga and meditation camp by Swami Atmabhishek Saraswati which will end on Thursday.

`Kavi Durbar' held

NEW DELHI SEPT. 29. A Punjabi teachers' "Kavi Darbar'' was held at Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College (Evening) at Dev Nagar in Karol Bagh on Monday.

The Delhi Minorities Commission member, P.S. Bawa, was the chief guest.

Mr. Bawa praised the activities of the Punjabi Academy, Delhi, but regretted that though Panjabi had been declared the second language in Delhi, it was not being implemented in word and spirit.

He also told the gathering that he would take up the issue of increasing the salaries of part-time teachers of the Punjabi Academy with the higher authorities.
