BIDAR, SEPT. 29. The first-ever byelection to the Bidar Lok Sabha seat will be remembered for two reasons: it is the first election in Bidar without the involvement of Ramachandra Veerappa, and the first poll which the Bharatiya Janata Party has to fight on the basis of its ideology and not on the late leader's personality. Mr. Veerappa was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1962 and 1967 as a Congress candidate and in 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2004 as the BJP's nominee. He was a member of the Hyderabad Legislative Council in 1952 and entered the Assembly from Aland in 1957 and from Hulsoor in 1983. Between 1971 and 1983, and between 1985 and 1991, he held various positions in the Congress, the Janata Party, and the Bharatiya Lok Dal. He was also vice-president of the Bidar Sahakari Sakkare Karakhane for some time.
A friend to all
He had a reputation of not criticising any leader from the Opposition in his speeches and for not dwelling upon the Hindutva ideology. Party sources say that in many elections, he spent less than many of his party nominees in the Assembly polls. In a way, he started the BJP "wave'' in Bidar which led to the party candidates winning six of the eight Assembly seats under the Bidar Lok Sabha Constituency, says Manmathappa Bichkunde, his personal secretary and biographer. The teetotaller Arya Samaji continued to live in his ancestral house in the `Kufal Tod Colony' in Humnabad and never tried to buy a house in the district headquarter of Bidar nor in New Delhi. Although Veerappa's contribution to the development of Bidar has come under criticism, he was popular among leaders in the BJP and other parties as he never tried to harm their political career.
