Hari Shankar shatters Natl. mark

KOCHI, SEPT. 29. Bengal's Hari Shankar Roy shattered his own men's high jump national record while winning the silver at the first Asian All-Stars Athletic Championship in Singapore on Tuesday night.

The top three finishers, China's Hu Tong, Hari Shankar and Vietnam's Bang Nguyen Duy all cleared 2.25 m, but Junior World silver medallist Tong won the gold on a count back with Hari Shankar taking the silver.

Hari Shankar has been involved in a few close finishes in the past. He and Tamil Nadu's Benedict Starly fought a tight battle in the Inter-State Championship in Chennai in July at the end of which the two were tied at 2.18 m, a new national record.

The results — Men's high jump: 1. Hu Tong (Chn, 2.25m) 2. Hari Shankar Roy (Ind, 2.25), 3. Nguyen Duy Bang (Vie, 2.25).

Women's javelin: 1. Ma Ning (Chn, 56.71m), 2. Harumi Yamamoto (Jpn, 50.20), 3. Chanthana Hongsan (Tha, 50.01).

Shot put: 1. Zhang Guirong (Sin, 18.37m), 2. Liu Ying Fan (Chn, 17.52), 3. Krasaeyan Juthapon (Tha, 15.56). — Our Principal Correspondent
