MANGALORE, SEPT. 29. In this era of technological advancement, Hindi plays a vital role in the furtherance of banking transactions by virtue of being the most widely spoken language in the country, K. Cherian Varghese, Chairman and Managing Director of Corporation Bank, has said. He was addressing a gathering at a function organised by the Corporation Bank to observe Hindi Day here on Wednesday. Mr. Varghese said now Hindi could be incorporated in every sphere of banking activity bringing banking closer to the common man. During the pre-Independence era, Hindi had helped unify the people of the country to fight the British. It had helped inculcate a strong feeling of oneness among the Indians. The people of the country gave vent to their emotions in Hindi and it had helped strengthen the spirit of unity among them. On September 14, 1949 the Constituent Assembly proclaimed Hindi as the official language of the country. Mr. Varghese distributed prizes to winners of various competitions organised by the bank. K. Achutha Pai, General Manager of the bank, welcomed the gathering. R.P. Gopalan, Assistant General Manager, read out the official language report. J.P. Nautiyal, Chief Manager, Official Language Division of the bank, proposed a vote of thanks.
Hindi Fortnight
The Airports Authority of India celebrated Hindi Fortnight from September 14 to September 27. Various competitions were organised as part of the fortnight to encourage the use of Hindi, a press release from M.R. Vasudeva, Airport Director, Mangalore Airport, here on Wednesday said. The valedictory function was organised at the Airport on Tuesday. The competitions included handwriting, dictation, essay writing, extempore speech, Hindi quiz on different aspects of the Official Language Implementation Act, translation, noting and drafting as well as singing. The Regional Manager of Syndicate Bank, B.K. Bhat, who was the chief guest at the valedictory function, gave away prizes and certificates to the winners. Suresh Kumar, Hindi officer, Corporation Bank, was the special guest. He lauded the efforts made by the Airports Authority to popularise the use of Hindi in its offices. Mr. Vasudeva listed various actions taken to improve the use of Hindi and stressed that the use of Hindi would unite India. Bhaskar Bhatta, Hindi Nodal Officer, presented a report. Kanthi D. Kini proposed a vote of thanks.
