MANGALORE, SEPT. 29. Residents of Koluvailu Island, situated between Suratkal and Mulky, are a harried lot. They have been demanding the concreting of the road that leads to their area for as long as 10 years now. More than 30 memorandums have been submitted and several agitations have been held, all in futile. They have now sent a petition to the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, Janardhan Poojary, hoping for a speedy solution to the problem. "All our previous appeals have fallen on deaf ears. Our calls and letters were not even acknowledged,'' Daniel Devraj, leader of the Koluvailu Island Action Committee, told The Hindu. He said the villagers would wait for a fortnight and if the problem had still not been solved, then they would hold a protest on the premises of Mr. Poojary's residence. "We have also sent a sample of the mud and the water on the road in a tiny a glass bottle,'' Mr. Daniel said. The road, which stretches for nearly two kilometres, is impossible to traverse on a rainy day. Several protests have been held, especially in the last two years. In April last year, villagers had rolled on the road for up to a kilometre to get the attention of the authorities. In July last year, the villagers held a black flag demonstration against the MLA of the region, Abhayachandra Jain. More recently, on August 12, the villagers resorted to splashing of mud on the effigy of Mr. Jain. "We took the extreme step because we wanted to bring to the attention of the people outside, the condition of our only approach road,'' Mr. Daniel said. The island comprises 150 houses and nearly 1,000 people. Schoolchildren, old men and women and just about every one from the village have to cross an uneven path to reach other areas. "Our vehicles too are affected by the condition of this road,'' Mr. Daniel said.
