CHENNAI, SEPT. 29. The XVIII Metropolitan Magistrate, Saidapet, today allowed the city police to take custody of three youths arrested in connection with the Stephanie death case for two days. The Mylapore police said the three -- Raja (22), Venkatesan (21) and Nestlyn (19) - had been taken into custody for interrogation. Police told the court that they sought custody to further investigate the case. The fourth arrested is a 16-year-old youth, Denver. Stephanie, employed at a call centre at Velachery, died when she was run over by the four young men who reportedly chased her after leaving a hotel on Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai, late on September 18. The four youths, believed to have been drunk, chased her in their car up to the Nilgiris supermarket, where the car collided against the scooter. Stephanie was thrown off her vehicle and run over. She died on the spot. Traffic police subsequently arrested Venkatesan (21), Nestlyn (19), a second year student in a city college, Denver (16), a Vepery schools student and Raja (22), a bill collector with a mobile company. Shastri Nagar Traffic police, who initially handled the case, took blood samples of all the four youths which confirmed that they were under the influence of alcohol. A case under Section 304 of the IPC (Culpable homicide not amounting to murder) was filed against them. They were remanded to judicial custody till October 1.
