CHENNAI, SEPT. 29. Rain lashed parts of the city and the suburbs on Wednesday morning, signalling relief to a city suffering from a prolonged spell of drought. The heavy rain left roads waterlogged and threw traffic out of gear. Traffic was snarled during the rush hour in many parts of the city, especially Jawaharlal Nehru Salai (Inner Ring Road). Motorists reported waterlogging in Vadapalani and Perambur too. Residents of North Chennai, especially Perambur and Vysarpadi, found it difficult to negotiate the waterlogged roads. However, the rain was sporadic and the capricious change in weather caught residents unawares. Anna Nagar, Nungambakkam and Choolaimedu witnessed heavy showers. While Nungambakkam recorded 17.5 mm of rainfall between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m, Meenambakkam received only 2.8 mm of rainfall in the same period on Wednesday. The Meteorological office said the rains were brought by a trough of low pressure in the Southwest bay of Tamil Nadu. The officials forecast more showers or thundershowers in parts of the city on Thursday too. However, the rain did not lead to any major inflow into the city's reservoirs except for Poondi, which reported a storage of 12.2 million cubic feet, up from 11.7 mcft on Tuesday. Chembarambakkam reservoir recorded the maximum rainfall of the city reservoirs with 12 mm, followed by Cholavaram (6 mm) and Red Hills (5 mm).
