50,000 invited to birthday party

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, SEPT. 29. The Bharatiya Janata Party today said that the grand celebrations for party leader B.S. Yediyurappa's 61 birthday on Friday was not a political event but a "cultural celebration."

The Shivajinagar MLA, Katta Subramanya Naidu, who is organising the event at Palace Grounds here, with Satyanarayana puja and lunch for an estimated 50,000 people, said admirers and well-wishers of Mr. Yediyurappa were making contributions.

Addressing presspersons, he denied that Friday's function, which would be attended by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the party president. M. Venkaiah Naidu, was an attempt at face-saving for the party after the election debacle. The venue will be a theatre for Mr. Vajpayee and other leaders to try to motivate party workers in the run-up to the Bidar bypoll, some party spokesmen admitted.
