Corporators want all vacancies filled

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, SEPT. 29. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Council on Wednesday authorised the Commissioner, K. Jothiramalingam, to seek permission from the State Government to fill all sanctioned posts in the civic body.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at the Council meeting here.

The Council resolved to appeal to the Government to withdraw the services of officials on deputation who had served for more than three years in the BMP. The members demanded that the Government should not interfere in ward-level posting of engineers. "All postings should happen through the Commissioner. If the Government is posting engineers on deputation to the wards, what is the Commissioner's job," the members asked.

The Mayor, P.R. Ramesh, said a representation would be made to the Government in this regard.

The other resolutions included inviting tenders for preparing project reports of the second phase of asphalting of roads and shifting a slum near the Quddus Sab Iddgah Maidan in Jayamahal constituency (as per the directions of the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh).

Protest

Mumtaz Begum, Shivajinagar corporator, demanded action against a BMP Executive Engineer in her ward for demolishing encroachments on OPH Road "without informing her". "The officials have neither issued notices to the shop owners nor have they informed the area corporator. They suddenly started the operation and in the process damaged the shops that have been constructed 100 years ago. The shop-owners have incurred a loss of over Rs. 2 crores," she said.

The Commissioner said the demolition was carried out on the basis of letters from the police and the Lokayukta.

"The police had asked us to clear the encroachments on OPH Road as they obstructed traffic. It was learnt that the shop owners had let out the pavements in front of their shops to hawkers and were collecting rent from them. It is not necessary for us to issue notices before demolishing encroachments," he said. "I will look into the issue. Meanwhile, we have stopped the demolition and given the shop owners 10 days to clear all encroachments on their own," he added.

Water for toilets

All the 89 Nirmala Bangalore toilets constructed by the BMP would get regular water supply by November. "Borewells have been drilled in 17 places and within a month we will complete drilling in all 89 places," the BMP Engineer-in-Chief, Ramegowda, said.

Kannada board

B.N. Mangala charged the Mayor of being anti-Kannada. "The name board showing direction to Patalamma Gudi in V.V. Puram (represented by the Mayor) has been written in English and Urdu and not in Kannada," she said. The Mayor admitted it was a mistake and said it would be rectified.
